Year 5 Science | Properties and Changes of Materials | Lesson 1: How Easily Will it Dissolve?
What does it mean when something dissolves? In this first lesson of our Year 5 Properties and Changes of Materials unit, pupils investigate how easily different materials dissolve in water. Using everyday solids such as salt, sugar, flour, and pepper, children begin to develop their understanding of solubility and solutions through simple, practical testing.
Part of our Scintillating Science programme, this lesson introduces key vocabulary and scientific concepts in a clear and accessible way. Pupils build on their knowledge of solids and liquids from Year 4, while applying enquiry skills to carry out a fair test. This is a great opportunity to revisit prior learning and set the tone for scientific thinking across the unit.
In this lesson, pupils will:
- 🧪 Test a range of solids to see how easily they dissolve
- 🧪 Record results using a solubility scale
- 🧪 Learn the difference between soluble and insoluble substances
- 🧪 Use correct scientific vocabulary to explain what happens
Included in this lesson:
- ✔️ Interactive teaching slides and guided discussion prompts
- ✔️ A detailed lesson plan with key vocabulary and misconceptions
- ✔️ Differentiated investigation worksheet
- ✔️ Ideas for continuous provision and challenge
An engaging and practical start to the unit, with a strong focus on working scientifically.
