Year 4 Science | Sound | Lesson 5: What is Volume?
What makes a sound loud or quiet? In this Year 4 science lesson from our Sound unit, pupils explore the concept of volume and how it relates to the strength of vibrations. Children investigate how different factors affect how loud or soft a sound is and begin to use scientific vocabulary to explain their observations.
This lesson supports enquiry-based learning through hands-on activities and guided discussion. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions and draw conclusions, building on their prior understanding of sound, pitch and vibration.
Designed to support the Ofsted science subject report, this session promotes progression in vocabulary, scientific knowledge, and application to real-life contexts.
Included in this lesson:
- ✔️ Visual teaching slides to introduce and explain key ideas
- ✔️ A full lesson plan with vocabulary, misconceptions and assessment prompts
- ✔️ Differentiated pupil tasks to suit a range of needs
- ✔️ Practical investigations to support concept development
A valuable lesson that helps pupils understand how sound volume works in everyday life, reinforcing scientific thinking through purposeful, engaging activities.
