Year 4 Science | Sound | Lesson 1: How is Sound Made Through Vibrations?

What is sound, and where does it come from? In this first lesson of the Year 4 Sound unit, pupils explore how sounds are created by vibrations. Through hands-on investigation and discussion, children begin to understand that sound is a form of energy that travels through the air to our ears.

Part of our Scintillating Science programme, this lesson introduces key concepts in a clear, engaging way, setting the foundation for future learning about pitch, volume and how we hear. Pupils are encouraged to observe, ask questions, and use scientific vocabulary to describe what they discover.

This lesson supports the aims of the Ofsted science subject report by promoting curiosity, developing accurate vocabulary use, and building secure knowledge through practical enquiry.

Included in this lesson:

  • ✔️ Engaging teaching slides with visual prompts and questioning
  • ✔️ A comprehensive lesson plan with key vocabulary and assessment guidance
  • ✔️ Differentiated activities to support and extend learning
  • ✔️ Optional practical resources to enhance investigation skills

A strong start to the unit, helping pupils make sense of the sounds all around them through scientific exploration.
