Year 4 Science | States of Matter | Lesson 5: Can We Make the Perfect Recipe?

To finish the States of Matter unit, pupils take on a real-life challenge: using their knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to test and improve a recipe. This practical, enquiry-led lesson gives children the chance to explore how ingredients behave when heated or cooled—and what happens when you change the method or quantities.

Part of our Scintillating Science programme, this lesson links science to everyday life and helps develop essential working scientifically skills. Children will plan, carry out and evaluate an investigation, reflecting on how materials change state and how this affects the final outcome.

In line with the Ofsted science subject report, this lesson supports hands-on learning, clear sequencing, and purposeful science enquiry.

What’s included in this lesson?

  • 🧪 Interactive slides to guide discussion and model vocabulary
  • 🧪 Structured lesson plan with cross-curricular links to maths and DT
  • 🧪 Differentiated worksheets and investigation templates
  • 🧪 Optional continuous provision and extension tasks

This is an ideal opportunity to consolidate learning from across the unit, develop confidence in fair testing, and encourage pupils to see science as something they can apply in real contexts. Perfect for ending the block on a high.
