Year 4 Science | States of Matter | Lesson 3: How Does Water Change State?

Water is all around us – but how does it change from one state to another? In this hands-on lesson from our Scintillating Science scheme, pupils explore the processes of melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation through observation and enquiry. This lesson builds on previous learning and deepens understanding of changes of state in line with the Ofsted science subject report.

Science Scheme | Year 4 | Block 1: States of Matter | Lesson 3: How Does Water Change State? gives pupils the opportunity to investigate how heating and cooling affect materials. Children will carry out simple tests, observe and record what happens, and use scientific vocabulary to explain the changes they see.

This lesson is part of our States of Matter unit, which introduces solids, liquids, gases, and the water cycle through a series of practical, well-sequenced science lessons.

This lesson includes:

  • 🧪 Interactive slides to guide and model key scientific ideas
  • 🧪 Detailed lesson plans with prior learning, misconceptions, vocabulary and assessment
  • 🧪 Differentiated worksheets and practical activities to support all pupils
  • 🧪 Optional continuous provision suggestions for further exploration

Pupils will develop their working scientifically skills by asking questions, observing changes over time, recording findings, and drawing conclusions. This lesson provides a strong foundation for understanding the water cycle and more complex changes in matter later in the unit.
