Year 4 Science | States of Matter | Lesson 1: Are They Solids, Liquids or Gases?

Scintillating Science is a carefully sequenced primary science scheme of work that ensures progression in both substantive and disciplinary knowledge. Aligned with the Ofsted science subject report, our scheme supports enquiry-led learning through engaging, hands-on lessons.

Science Scheme | Year 4 | Block 1: States of Matter | Lesson 1: Are They Solids, Liquids or Gases? introduces pupils to the key properties of the three main states of matter. Pupils will explore and compare solids, liquids and gases through observation and discussion, building their understanding of how materials behave and how we can group them.

This lesson begins our States of Matter unit for Year 4, laying the foundations for later learning about changes of state, evaporation, and condensation.

Each lesson includes:

  • 🧪 Interactive teaching slides with teacher notes and visual explanations
  • 🧪 Detailed lesson plans with key vocabulary, misconceptions, assessment, and cross-curricular links
  • 🧪 Continuous provision ideas for extending learning through play and exploration
  • 🧪 Differentiated worksheets and tasks to support all learners

This lesson supports working scientifically by encouraging children to observe closely, classify materials, and communicate their ideas using appropriate scientific vocabulary.
