There are 8 lessons in the Summer block of work, each of which focuses on a small step taken from the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from the national curriculum.
Each lesson has a PowerPoint presentation, an activity sheet and a worksheet.
The activity sheets focus more on practical activities and the worksheets apply the skills, often through writing. Each activity and worksheet is differentiated at two levels: less able and more able. The less challenging resources tend to use simpler vocabulary and often include visual prompts and scaffolding.
Each lesson plan also includes ideas for additional or continuous provision activities.
The vocabulary used in the resources in this block is aligned with the spelling curriculum that the children will be covering in Year 5. Sometimes the vocabulary is kept simple to allow the children to focus on the new concept that is being taught.
Dependent on your timetabling and individual needs of your children, you may wish to split each lesson over 2, 3 or more sessions.
Each session lasts 15 – 30 minutes depending on the age of the children and the complexity of the skills/knowledge being taught. The lessons are designed to be stand-alone though could be incorporated as part of the main English lesson.
The following small steps are covered this term:
✅ Use and punctuate ‘-ing’ opening clauses
✅ Recognise and use drop in relative clauses to create complex sentences
✅ Use commas to punctuate relative clauses and clarify meaning
✅ Identify and use commas to indicate parenthesis
✅ Identify and use dashes to indicate parenthesis
✅ Use expanded noun phrases to convey information concisely
✅ Use adverbials for time and place to link ideas across paragraphs
✅ Use adverbials for numbers to link ideas across paragraphs
✅ Use the perfect tense to link ideas across paragraphs

Pupils will also consolidate their understanding of the perfect tense, helping them structure their writing effectively.
The Year 5 SPaG Summer Term scheme covers the following small steps:
Each lesson includes structured PowerPoint slides, interactive activities, and differentiated worksheets, allowing pupils to engage with grammar concepts in meaningful ways. The resources encourage independent writing practice, reinforcing accuracy and fluency.
The Year 5 SPaG scheme for the Summer Term encourages pupils to refine their sentence structures by using complex clauses and expanded noun phrases. Pupils will learn how to use parenthesis effectively with commas and dashes, improving the clarity of their writing.
This term also focuses on linking ideas across paragraphs using adverbials for time, place, and number. Pupils will explore how to structure their writing with greater cohesion, preparing them for longer and more detailed compositions in Year 6.
Our SPaG scheme for Year 5 provides teachers with structured, engaging lessons that make grammar accessible and practical. The lessons are designed to build confidence in writing and support pupils in achieving greater accuracy and sophistication.
Key benefits of our Year 5 SPaG Summer Term scheme include:
By the end of Year 5, pupils should confidently use relative clauses, adverbials, expanded noun phrases, and the perfect tense to structure their writing effectively. They should also apply punctuation rules for parenthesis and complex sentences accurately.
Teaching cohesion should involve activities that help pupils identify how adverbials and conjunctions link ideas across paragraphs. Providing model texts and sentence-building exercises can help reinforce this skill.
Encouraging pupils to experiment with commas, dashes, and brackets in structured writing tasks can help them understand how punctuation impacts meaning. Guided editing and peer review activities can also reinforce correct usage.
