Spectacular SPaG is an exciting pick up and go SPaG scheme, using small steps, designed to save you time whilst making SPaG engaging and active.
SPaG is split into three blocks, Autumn, Spring and Summer, and there are approximately 10 lessons in each block of work, each of which focuses on a small step taken from the DfE’s English Appendix 2: Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation from the national curriculum.
Each lesson has a powerpoint presentation, an activity sheet and a worksheet. The activity sheets focus more on practical activities and the worksheets apply the skills, often through writing. Each activity and worksheet is differentiated at two levels. The less challenging resources tend to use words from earlier phonics phases and often include visual prompts and scaffolding.
Each lesson plan also includes ideas for additional or continuous provision activities. The lesson plans are in one download and can be found at the top of each term’s page.
The vocabulary used in the resources in this block is aligned with the spelling curriculum that the children will have covered by the end of Year 2. Sometimes the vocabulary is kept simple to allow the children to focus on the new concept that is being taught.
Dependent on your timetabling and individual needs of your children, you may wish to split each lesson over 2, 3 or more sessions.

In Year 3, children build on their understanding of spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG) as outlined in the National Curriculum. This stage focuses on enhancing their writing skills and developing a stronger grasp of the English language.
Children are introduced to a range of spelling patterns and rules, including the use of prefixes and suffixes. They learn to spell commonly used words correctly and are encouraged to apply these skills in their writing.
Punctuation is also a key focus, with pupils learning to use full stops, capital letters, question marks, and exclamation marks correctly. They explore how punctuation can change the meaning of sentences, helping them to write more clearly and effectively.
In grammar, children study sentence structure, including the use of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. They learn about subject-verb agreement and the importance of using varied sentence types to enhance their writing.
Through engaging activities and practical exercises, Year 3 pupils are equipped with the essential SPaG skills that form the foundation for their future learning in English.
