EYFS Morning Starter Activities

EYFS Morning Starter Activities

Morning jobs are a fantastic way to use that ‘bitty’ time when the children arrive at school and make it into a valuable learning opportunity. The included activities have been planned in a progressive way to support children with their phonics, mark-making, maths and fine motor skills.

How to use

Split your class into 5 groups. Each day children come in, put their belongings away and go to their allocated activity set up in the classroom. The following day they will do the next activity and so on, so by the time it gets to Friday, children will have completed each of the 5 challenges.

Make the most of that ‘bitty’ time when children arrive at school with our EYFS morning starter activities. These structured, progressive morning jobs help children settle in while reinforcing essential early years skills, including phonics, mark-making, maths, and fine motor development.

Our EYFS morning starters provide engaging, hands-on tasks that encourage independent learning. These activities are carefully planned to align with the EYFS framework and support a structured start to the day.

What Are EYFS Morning Starters?

Morning starter activities are purposeful, daily learning tasks designed to engage children as soon as they enter the classroom. In EYFS, they provide valuable opportunities for children to develop early literacy, numeracy, and fine motor skills while building independence and confidence.

At Mrs Mactivity, our EYFS morning starters include:

  • Structured, progressive learning activities for daily practice.
  • Phonics and mark-making tasks to support early writing.
  • Number recognition and counting challenges to develop fluency.
  • Fine motor skill development to strengthen hand muscles for writing.
  • Independent and small-group activities to build confidence.

How to Use EYFS Morning Starters

Our EYFS morning starters are designed to be used in a simple, structured way.

Step 1: Split your class into five groups.

Step 2: Each day, children arrive, put their belongings away, and go straight to their allocated activity set up in the classroom.

Step 3: The next day, children rotate to the next activity. By Friday, they will have completed all five challenges.

This simple system helps children develop a sense of routine while ensuring they engage in a variety of learning experiences throughout the week.
