Autumn Block 4: Multiplication and Division (Times Tables Facts)

Our Autumn Block 4: Multiplication and Division resources focus on strengthening pupils’ knowledge of multiplication and division facts, helping them to become fluent in their times tables. This block provides a structured approach to learning the 3, 6, 7, 9, 11, and 12 times tables, along with the essential mental strategies needed for efficient calculations.

What’s covered in this block?

Over four weeks, pupils will build and reinforce their multiplication and division skills. They will:

• Recall and apply multiplication and division facts for times tables up to 12 × 12
• Use factor pairs and commutativity to make calculations easier
• Learn to count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25, and 1,000
• Use place value and known facts to multiply and divide mentally

Week 9: Introducing times tables

Pupils will start by mastering the 3 and 6 times tables, followed by learning to multiply and divide by 6 and 9. They will focus on:

• Multiplying and dividing by 6
• Learning the 6 and 9 times tables
• Multiplying and dividing by 9

By the end of this week, pupils will have gained confidence in the 6 and 9 times tables, building fluency for more complex calculations in the following weeks.

Week 10: Expanding times tables

In this week, pupils will focus on the 3, 6, and 9 times tables while also learning the 7 and 11 times tables. They will:

• Multiply and divide by 7
• Learn the 7 and 11 times tables
• Multiply and divide by 11

This week provides a great opportunity for pupils to revisit and consolidate their understanding of the previous times tables while expanding their knowledge to include the 7 and 11 times tables.

Week 11: Mastering multiplication and division facts

Pupils will now work with the 12 times table and learn to multiply and divide by 12. They will also explore the effects of multiplying by 1 and 0, and dividing by 1 and itself. This week includes:

• Multiplying and dividing by 12
• Learning the 12 times table
• Exploring the concept of multiplying by 1 and 0 and dividing by 1 and itself
• Multiplying three numbers together

By the end of Week 11, pupils will be able to confidently multiply and divide by all times tables up to 12 and apply their knowledge to more complex problems.

Week 12: Consolidation week

This final week is dedicated to reinforcing and consolidating everything pupils have learned about multiplication and division facts. Pupils will review the times tables, practice using factor pairs, and explore mental strategies to ensure they can apply their knowledge with confidence in a range of contexts.

Why this block is important

Fluency with multiplication and division facts is essential for success in many areas of maths. By the end of this block, pupils will:

• Be able to recall multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12
• Understand and apply mental strategies for multiplication and division
• Be confident in their ability to solve problems involving times tables

Supporting pupils’ progress

These resources provide clear, engaging activities that help pupils build fluency and confidence with times tables. The structured lessons and varied activities ensure all pupils can progress at their own pace, with plenty of opportunities for practice and consolidation.

This block also includes access to a free Year 4 maths yearly overview and valuable maths subject leader resources to support planning and assessment.
