Autumn Block 2: Addition and Subtraction Within 1000

Week 4 Small Steps:

  • Use number bonds within 10
  • Add and subtract ones
  • Add and subtract tens
  • Add and subtract hundreds
  • Use patterns to add and subtract 1s, 10s and 100s

Week 5 Small Steps:

  • Add ones to a 3-digit number (crossing ten)
  • Add tens to a 3-digit number (crossing 100)
  • Subtract ones from a 3-digit number (crossing ten)
  • Subtract tens from a 3-digit number (crossing 100)
  • Related facts using ones, tens and hundreds

Week 6 Small Steps:

  • Add two 2-digit or 3-digit numbers (no exchange)
  • Subtract two 2-digit or 3-digit numbers (no exchange)
  • Add two 2-digit or 3-digit numbers (exchanging ones)
  • Add two 3-digit numbers (exchanging tens)
  • Solve problems with 2- and 3-digit additions

Week 7 Small Steps:

  • Subtract two 2-digit or 3-digit numbers (exchanging a ten)
  • Subtract two 3-digit numbers (exchanging a hundred)
  • Add 2-digit and 3-digit numbers
  • Subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number
  • Solve problems with 2- and 3-digit subtractions

Week 8 Small Steps:

  • Find complements to 100
  • Estimate answers to additions and subtractions
  • Use the inverse operation
  • Choose a method to solve addition and subtraction problems

National Curriculum Objectives:

  • Add and subtract numbers mentally, including:
    • a three-digit number and 1s
    • a three-digit number and 10s
    • a three-digit number and 100s
  • Add and subtract numbers with up to 3 digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction
  • Estimate the answer to a calculation and use inverse operations to check answers
  • Solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value, and more complex addition and subtraction

What do children learn in Autumn Block 2 for Year 3 maths?
Pupils build on their knowledge of number facts and place value to tackle mental and written addition and subtraction. They practise working with 3-digit numbers, using both no exchange and exchange methods, and solve problems in a range of contexts.
