The national curriculum requirements for what children should learn about properties of shape in year 2 are:

  1. Recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes, including:
  • 2D shapes: rectangles (including squares), circles, and triangles
  • 3D shapes: cuboids (including cubes), pyramids, and spheres
  1. Describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, including:
  • 2D shapes: the number of sides and vertices, and whether the sides are straight or curved
  • 3D shapes: the number of faces, edges, and vertices
  1. Identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes.
  2. Complete simple symmetric figures with respect to a specific line of symmetry.
  3. Draw 2D shapes and make 3D shapes using modelling materials.
  4. Sort 2D and 3D shapes into groups based on their properties.
  5. Use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including:
  • left and right
  • top, bottom, and middle
  • clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Our resources are designed to cover the whole of the year 2 maths curriculum, aligned with the progression of White Rose Maths.

We help you  teach children about the properties of shape using engaging and interactive teaching resources, hands-on activities and visual aids.

Year 2 2D and 3D Shape Resources

Help your pupils develop a solid understanding of 2D and 3D shapes with our engaging and effective Year 2 shape resources. Covering everything from identifying and sorting shapes to exploring their properties and real-life connections, our high-quality teaching materials will support you in delivering engaging maths lessons that help pupils make real progress.

Explore a Wide Range of 2D and 3D Shape Activities

Our collection of 2D and 3D shape worksheets provides plenty of opportunities for pupils to consolidate their learning. From simple shape identification activities to more challenging problem-solving tasks, these resources encourage children to recognise, compare, and describe different shapes with confidence.

Looking for 2D and 3D shape sorting activities? We’ve got a variety of practical and interactive tasks where pupils can categorise shapes based on their properties, such as the number of sides, edges, faces, and vertices. These activities help reinforce key mathematical vocabulary and develop reasoning skills.

Understanding the properties of 2D and 3D shapes is an essential part of the Year 2 maths curriculum. Our resources help pupils describe shapes accurately, recognising symmetrical patterns, counting edges and vertices, and comparing different shapes. With clear explanations and engaging activities, pupils will develop a deeper understanding of the differences between 2D and 3D shapes.

Ready-to-Use Teaching Presentations and Games

Make your maths lessons more interactive with our 2D and 3D shape PowerPoint presentations. These ready-made slides include clear explanations, visual aids, and questions to check understanding, helping to save you time while keeping lessons engaging and structured.

If you’re looking for 2D and 3D shape games, we have a selection of fun and effective activities designed to reinforce learning through play. Whether it’s matching games, dice-based challenges, or interactive quizzes, these games encourage pupils to apply their shape knowledge in an enjoyable way.

Shape Displays and Practical Activities

Bring learning to life with our **2D and 3D shape display posters**. These colourful, child-friendly visuals are perfect for your classroom walls, providing pupils with a handy reference for key shape names and properties. Whether you need a full shape word mat or individual posters, our display materials make a great addition to your learning environment.

Helping pupils recognise shapes in real life is key to deepening their understanding. Our **real-life examples of 3D shapes** activities encourage pupils to identify cubes, spheres, cones, and other 3D shapes in everyday objects. These resources are perfect for practical, hands-on learning that helps pupils make meaningful connections between maths and the world around them.

For a more creative approach, try our **cut and stick 2D and 3D shape activities**. These practical tasks allow pupils to construct, match, and sort shapes while improving their fine motor skills. Engaging and effective, these activities provide a hands-on way to explore shape properties.

Assess and Track Pupils’ Progress

To help you check pupils’ understanding, we offer **Year 2 2D and 3D shape assessment** resources. These quizzes, challenges, and structured tasks allow you to gauge progress, identify gaps in learning, and ensure that pupils have a secure understanding of shape properties before moving on to more complex geometry concepts.
