In Spring Block 1: Zero to Five, pupils will build a solid foundation in understanding numbers from 0 to 5. This unit provides a structured approach to number recognition, subitising, and the composition of numbers, all of which are key concepts for developing strong early mathematical skills. Through a series of carefully planned activities, pupils will deepen their understanding of numbers, learn how numbers are composed, and practise recognising quantities without counting. This unit, aligned with the **White Rose** progression, ensures a smooth progression in pupils’ mathematical journey.
Week 1: Introducing Zero to Five
The first week of the unit focuses on helping pupils recognise and understand the numbers 0 to 5, which are the building blocks for more advanced mathematical concepts.
– Recognise zero – Pupils will begin by learning the concept of zero. They will explore what zero represents and how it fits into the number system. Activities will include using objects to visually demonstrate that zero means ‘none,’ helping pupils make a meaningful connection to the number.
– Find an amount 0 to 5 – Pupils will practise finding sets of objects representing numbers from 0 to 5. They will engage in activities like counting objects, matching objects to numbers, and using manipulatives to reinforce the understanding of each number.
– Subitise 0 to 5 – Subitising is the ability to recognise a number of objects without having to count them individually. In this activity, pupils will practise recognising quantities from 0 to 5 instantly, which is an important skill for developing number sense. They will work with small collections of objects and quickly identify how many there are.
– Represent 0 to 5 – Pupils will use a variety of tools to represent numbers from 0 to 5, such as drawing, using counters, or building with blocks. This visual representation of numbers reinforces the connection between the number symbol and its corresponding quantity.
Week 2: Understanding One More, One Less, and Composition
In the second week, pupils will explore how numbers are related to one another and begin to understand the concept of adding one or taking away one. This week also introduces the concept of the composition of numbers, which is crucial for developing addition and subtraction skills later on.
– Understand one more – Pupils will explore the concept of adding one to a number, helping them understand how numbers grow. They will practise counting forwards and identifying what happens when one is added to a number, such as 3 becoming 4.
– Understand one less – In contrast, pupils will also explore the concept of taking one away from a number. They will practise counting backwards and recognising what happens when one is subtracted from a number, like 4 becoming 3.
– Explore the composition of numbers to 5 – Pupils will learn how numbers are made up of smaller parts. For example, they will explore the fact that 3 can be made up of 2 and 1, or 4 can be made up of 3 and 1. This activity builds a foundation for understanding addition and subtraction in future learning.
– Conceptually subitise to 5 – Pupils will develop the ability to recognise quantities without counting them by visually understanding numbers up to 5. This activity helps them build number sense and lays the groundwork for more complex mathematical thinking in the future.
Meeting the Early Learning Goals (ELG)
This unit is designed to help pupils meet the Early Learning Goals (ELG) for number and numerical patterns. The activities in this unit will ensure that pupils develop a deep understanding of numbers to 10, with a particular focus on the numbers 0 to 5.
– Have a deep understanding of numbers to 10, including the composition of each number – By the end of this unit, pupils will have a strong grasp of the numbers to 5 and begin to understand how those numbers can be combined in different ways.
– Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5 – Pupils will develop the important skill of subitising, which is key for fluency in early number work.
– Automatically recall number bonds up to 5 – Pupils will start to recognise number bonds up to 5, such as 1 and 4 make 5, and also develop a sense of subtraction facts like 5 minus 4 equals 1. They will also explore number bonds to 10, laying the groundwork for more complex number bonds in future learning.
Why This Unit Matters
A solid understanding of numbers is the foundation for all future mathematical learning. By focusing on the numbers 0 to 5 in this unit, pupils will gain the essential skills needed for counting, subitising, and understanding the composition of numbers. These skills will support future learning in addition, subtraction, and place value.
Subitising and recognising quantities instantly help pupils develop a strong sense of number and lay the groundwork for fluency in mental arithmetic. Understanding how numbers are made up (composition) helps pupils develop strategies for adding and subtracting numbers. Through this unit, pupils will build confidence in their mathematical abilities and develop a strong foundation for the more advanced topics they will encounter in later years.
Aligned with the White Rose progression, this unit ensures that pupils are introduced to number concepts in a logical and structured way, setting them up for success in future mathematics learning.
