Autumn Block 3: Measure and Patterns

In Autumn Block 3, pupils will explore measuring size, mass, and capacity, alongside recognising, continuing, and creating repeating patterns.

Week 5: Measure

In Week 5, pupils will focus on comparing size, mass, and capacity.

Comparing size – Pupils will compare objects of different sizes, understanding the concepts of bigger and smaller. They will practice using non-standard units of measurement, such as their hands or feet, to compare sizes of objects.
Comparing mass – Pupils will compare the mass of objects, exploring concepts like heavier and lighter. They will use hands-on activities with objects to understand the difference in weight.
Comparing capacity – Pupils will explore the capacity of different containers, understanding which can hold more or less. They will practice pouring liquids and comparing the amounts different containers can hold.

Week 6: Patterns

In Week 6, pupils will explore repeating patterns.

Identifying a repeating pattern – Pupils will begin by identifying simple repeating patterns in objects, colours, and sounds. They will look for sequences and learn to recognise when a pattern is repeating.
Continuing a repeating pattern – Pupils will practice continuing a given pattern. Using a variety of materials, they will extend patterns by adding the correct next element in the sequence.
Creating a repeating pattern – Pupils will create their own repeating patterns, experimenting with colours, shapes, or objects to form and extend patterns.

This block introduces foundational concepts of measurement and pattern recognition, building essential skills for future mathematical learning.
