Year 4 Geography Unit: Settlements and Land Use

Help pupils develop a deeper understanding of settlements and land use with this engaging and comprehensive Year 4 geography unit. Designed to support the National Curriculum for Geography, this unit encourages pupils to explore the features of different types of settlements, how land is used within them, and how human and physical factors influence their development.

Through a carefully sequenced series of lessons, pupils will investigate how settlements have changed over time and the reasons why people choose to live in certain places. They will compare urban, rural, and suburban areas, examining their characteristics and identifying key differences. Pupils will also explore land use patterns in the UK and beyond, considering how geographical factors such as climate, resources, and transport links affect the way land is utilised.

This unit supports key National Curriculum objectives, ensuring pupils can:
Describe and understand key aspects of human geography, including types of settlement and land use, economic activity, and the distribution of natural resources

  • Use maps, atlases, globes, and digital mapping to locate and explore different types of settlements
  • Recognise patterns in land use and explain how these have developed over time
  • Draw conclusions from geographical data and present their findings using appropriate terminology
  • Interactive activities, enquiry-based learning, and opportunities for discussion help pupils develop their geographical skills while making meaningful connections to real-world contexts.

The unit also encourages pupils to think critically about the impact of human activity on the environment and how land use decisions affect communities.

Each lesson is designed to build on previous knowledge, ensuring pupils develop a secure understanding of settlements and land use. Carefully structured tasks, differentiated resources, and engaging visuals support pupils of all abilities, making geography accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

By the end of the unit, pupils will be able to confidently discuss the different types of settlements, explain the factors that influence land use, and demonstrate their understanding using a range of geographical skills. This unit provides a strong foundation for future geographical studies and helps pupils develop a curiosity about the world around them.
