What is continuous provision?

Continuous provision is a child-led approach to learning where thoughtfully chosen resources and activities are available for children to access independently throughout the day. It creates a rich, enabling environment where children can explore, play, and learn at their own pace, supported by skilled adults who observe, question and guide learning in meaningful ways.

This approach is widely used in EYFS settings but is increasingly found in Year 1 classrooms and even across KS1, as more schools recognise the benefits of developmentally appropriate, play-based learning that still meets curriculum expectations.

What is guided play?

Guided play is a key feature of continuous provision. The adult sets up areas that are intentionally planned based on the children’s previous learning, interests and needs. Rather than directing activities, the teacher plays an active but subtle role – observing, joining in where appropriate, and asking open-ended questions that move learning forward.

This approach supports a balance between freedom and structure. It’s not about leaving children to wander aimlessly, nor is it about telling them what to do. Instead, it’s about creating engaging environments that invite curiosity and encourage independent, purposeful play.

What are the benefits of continuous provision?

Continuous provision supports all areas of learning and development, and provides numerous benefits for children in the Early Years and KS1, including:

  1. Promotes independence: Children learn to make choices, manage their time, and explore resources on their own terms.
  2. Encourages creativity: Open-ended materials inspire imaginative play and creative thinking.
  3. Supports problem-solving: As children explore, they naturally encounter challenges and work out solutions.
  4. Builds confidence: Child-led play helps children become confident decision-makers and active learners.
  5. Facilitates deep learning: Children return to familiar areas again and again, embedding key skills over time.
  6. Flexible and inclusive: Teachers can adapt provision to suit the needs and interests of all pupils.
