There’s a buzz in the air and it can only be the build up to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022 celebrations, and we’ve got lots planned to help you celebrate in style, either in your classroom or at home!
What is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee?
This year (2022), it is the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth becoming our Queen. It celebrates her many years of service to not only the U.K., but the rest of the world too. But why do we call it the Platinum Jubilee?
Certain anniversaries have special names, and children might find it of interest to discuss the different ones. You could explain that these also relate to things like wedding anniversaries, as well as the Jubilees.
Silver: 25 years
Ruby: 40 years
Gold: 50 years
Diamond: 60 years
Platinum: 70 years
What is a Jubilee?
A Jubilee is a special anniversary of a special event. We often talk about jubilees when we celebrate anniversaries of when kings and queens are crowned. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will take place from the 2nd to 5th June 2022 and everyone is invited to join in and celebrate!
What will happen during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee?
On Thursday 2nd June, the Queen’s birthday parade will take place (most of us will watch on television, or go in person!). There will be 1200 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians parading through London, beginning at Buckingham Palace, with the Queen and Royal Family watching from the balcony. On Friday 3rd June, there will be a service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
On the 4th June, there will be a huge celebration at Buckingham Palace called the “Platinum Party at the Palace”. Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s official house, though she prefers to stay in her other homes as they are more comfortable. BBC1 will broadcast the “Platinum Party at the Palace” with entertainers performing in front of Her Majesty the Queen. The public will be able to watch along at home, although 10,000 lucky people have also been sent tickets.
During the party, actors and musicians will re-tell the story and celebrate important moments of the Queen’s 70 year reign.
The Big Jubilee Lunch will be on Sunday 5th June. People are encouraged to come together with family, friends and neighbours and share food and fun together. This could be a picnic, barbeque, street party, or just a cup of tea with some cake.
What else will happen during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations?
- Each child will also receive a special book for free. The book will celebrate lots of things that have happened over the past 70 years, both in the U.K. and in the Commonwealth. This will include historic events, inspirational people, inventions and art.
- Everyone will get an extra bank holiday! You will probably already be off school though, as it is during the half term holiday.
